Black History Month represents many things: civic leadership, social stewardship, community activation and much more.

Nike recognizes the importance of this meaningful month with not only a product collection, but a larger recognition of the power of sports to impact society. The 2013 Nike Black History Month Collection mantra “Be Bold. Be True.” celebrates three athletes who are fearless in action and fueled by a purpose.

Now more than ever, athletes at all levels have a unique ability to extend their voice beyond sports. Soccer superstar Didier Drogba, tennis legend Serena Williams and basketball phenom Kevin Durant provide creative inspiration for the product collection based on their commitment to giving back to their communities.

All three athletes are celebrated in this year’s collection; each has an individual logo. Drogba’s is a light bulb morphed with a soccer ball, representing his ongoing involvement in bringing solar light bulbs to impoverished areas in Africa. Williams’ icon consists of a tennis ball emanating with lightning bolts, showing how she empowers young women, especially through the secondary school she helped build in Kenya. Durant’s icon represents the hopes and dreams of young athletes, with a basketball hoop merging with a cloud formation, a nod to the support he has given to his hometown recreation center in Seat Pleasant, Maryland, a place he attributes for helping him realize his own dreams. The three icons are infused into a distinct Nike BHM print pattern that appears throughout the collection.

Nike Sportswear BHM shoes include the Nike Lunar Force 1, Nike Air Force 1 Foamposite Hi, Nike Dunk Sky Hi and Nike Air Force 1 Downtown.

In keeping with a tradition of honoring organizations that give back and inspire youth, NIKE, Inc. will make a financial contribution to Big Brothers Big Sisters of America with proceeds from the Nike BHM Collection.

Released this week was the first shoe to sport Nike’s patented Air-sole unit, as conceived by aerospace technology specialist Frank Rudy.

The Tailwind debuted at the Honolulu Marathon in 1978 before seeing a broad release the following year.

Returning in its OG form with a breathable mesh and suede upper, the pair boast a nylon tongue, retro branding, and waffle sole. The Nike Tailwind 79 is now available at CONCRETE.

Nike Sportswear drops another interesting Vac Tech version of a classic sneaker – the Air Max 97.

The Air Max 97 VT features a Midnight Fog, all suede upper. The white midsole provides contrast for an otherwise tonal colorway, with perforated details adding texture to the one-piece upper.
The Nike Air Max 97 VT is available now at CONCRETE.

Nike Sportswear “Sport is Art” Collection

Embracing sports as a powerful art form, Nike Sportswear launches the Nike Sportswear Tee Collection presenting the most enticing pop culture elements, together with Nike’s iconic designs all on a T-shirt. In celebration of this innovative initiative, from May 17–26, the Nike Sportswear store in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong will be transformed into a pop art gallery showcasing 25 tees designed by the most sought-after creative talents from 11 countries.
Echoing the line’s spirit in asking designers to push athletic innovation to its extreme, Nike called upon an array of street artists, designers and illustrators from around the world to splash their flying imaginations onto a T-shirt. By using a T-shirt as their creative canvas, they were to draw inspiration from Nike’s Air Max classic series. Through various mediums, including computer illustrations, sketches and ink splashes, etc., a creative pattern is formed vividly on a T-shirt, fully interpreting the essence of “Sport is Art.”

Once again Stussy will be getting together with Nike Sportswear on a couple of sneakers. This time they chose to work on the Nike Sky Force 88 Mid sneaker. As part of the collaboration the sneaker will come in 4 colorways. A black and a green colorway come in a mix of leather and canvas, featuring a camo pattern. Two more will come in black and wheat, with clean leather/canvas uppers. The matching tonal laces and just overall details, make this pack a winner. The Stussy logo has been embossed on the tongue, integrated into the classic Sky Force 88 logo. A release should take place soon – we will keep you posted.

Today we take a closer look at NSW’s AFE (Athletic Far East) Spring/Summer 2011 collection, the AFE range makes up some of the strongest apparel we have seen from Nike Sportswear so far. From jackets to pants, the details and material choices result in a beautiful line-up of items, that are hardly branded and always keep the functionality in mind, all in toned down but impressive colour schemes. Nike’s NSW line is available at Concrete.
